Tokyo’s Meguro Ward hosts a mesmerizing art illumination event from July 1st to September 24th, 2023 at the illustrious Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. This year’s theme of “Wa no Akari x Hyakudan Kaidan: A Vivid Spectacle of Hundred Demons” offers an immersive, vibrant, and slightly eerie cultural adventure.
This event is set in the historic Hyakudan Kaidan, a tangible cultural property of Tokyo nestled within the hotel. The Hyakudan Kaidan, or “Hundred Steps Staircase,” serves as the grand stage for the vibrant array of illumination art.
Light and Shadows, Tradition and Modernity
“Wano Akari x Hyakudan Kaidan” immerses you in an artistic landscape, where illumination pieces in various genres and techniques interweave with the theme of a vivid parade of demons. The festival’s compelling narrative invites attendees on an almost mystical journey from this world into another.
The festival features more than 20 ‘Kagosometorou’, lanterns that cast enchanting shadows on the floors, as well as innovative collaborations with Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement).
Among the displays, you’ll find intriguing sustainable illumination art made from upcycled pet bottles. A multitude of art forms, including traditional crafts and contemporary pieces, add depth and diversity to the event.
Prepare to be transported to a world of ethereal beauty tinged with an otherworldly allure. As you traverse the illuminated Hyakudan Kaidan, you’ll encounter a sensational fusion of color, light, original music, and fragrances, all meticulously crafted to stimulate your senses.
What awaits you at the top of the staircase? Expect to be greeted by a fantastical realm where art, light, and shadows converge.
The vivid spectacle of hundred demons and the fantasy world of light art seems to promise a memorable experience.
