The Mother and Child Jizo or Boshi Jizo at Senso-ji was built to comfort the spirits of mothers and children who were unable to return to Japan from Manchuria during the chaos at the end of World War II.
It is said that more than 200,000 Japanese lost their lives in Manchuria in northeastern China at that time, and there were countless mothers and children who were separated from their families.
The Jizo was erected to comfort the souls of these people and to ensure that the mistakes of the past will never be repeated.
