Ryugenji Temple is commonly known as Hagidera and is one of the famous places depicted in Saito Gessen’s Edo Meisho Zue (Illustrated Guide to Famous Places of Edo).
The temple was founded in 1395 by the monk Yoshihiro Yamasho, enshrining the deity Kannon (Goddess of Mercy).
In the grounds of the temple, there is a Jizo Hall where the Kogo-Hachikki Jizo Son is enshrined and the oldest monument of Matsuo Basho’s haiku in Tokyo.
