As one of the celebrated “Three Major Festivals Of Hakone”, alongside the picturesque Lakeside Festival and the Hakone Daimyo Procession, this festivity is one you’d not want to miss.

What To Expect At Daimonji Yaki

If you’re new to the area or just dropping by for the festivities, you might wonder: what’s this all about?

The Daimonji Yaki is traditionally celebrated at the peak of Myojogatake Mountain, commonly known as “Daimonji Mountain”, right in front of the Gora Hot Springs. With a tradition dating back to 1921, it was initially aimed to entertain travelers. Now, it’s considered an essential part of Hakone’s summer.

What’s eye-catching? The massive “大” character, glowing against the mountain backdrop. Made by bundling around 100 thin bamboos and using approximately 200-300 torches, each about 30cm in diameter and 2.5m in height, the sight is genuinely a marvel.

The crescendo? A vibrant firework display of about 2,000 shots painting the night sky.
