This is the final resting place of Kawatake Mokuami, a kabuki and kyogen playwright active from Edo to the early Meiji period.
Kawatake Mokuami was born on 3 February 1816 in Nihonbashi, Edo, and became a pupil of Tsuruya Nanboku V in 1835. In 1843 he took the Name Kawatake Shinshichi II, and became famous for writing ‘Ninobu no Sota’ for the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Kodanji IV and ‘Benten Kônen’ for Kikugoro V.
After his retirement, he changed his name to Mokuami. He died here at the age of 76 on 22 January 1893, having left some 360 plays during his lifetime.
