Shibamata Teishakuten is a Nichiren Shu temple known as the temple associated with “Otoko wa Tsuraiyo”. Its official name is Daikyō-ji Temple, but is more commonly referred to as Taishuteun

The temple holds a festival every year on the day of the 57th day of the sexagenary cycle, since the day on which the main image of Teishakuten, whose whereabouts had been unknown for many years, was found was the day of the 57th day of the sexagenary cycle in 1779 (An’ei 8).

The approach to Teishakuten from Shibamata Station is lined with long-established shops that have been around since the Edo period, including Toraya (Kurumaya), which appeared in Otoko wa Tsuraiyo.

Their specialties, such as Kusa-dango (rice dumplings with sweet bean paste) and shio senbei (salt rice crackers), are very popular as souvenirs.

There is a sculpture gallery where sculptures carved from the Taisho and early Showa periods are on display, and the Hodokeien Garden, a circular garden, and the Grand Guest House, designated as a historical building by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, can be visited for a Fee.

The temple enshrines the deities Teishakuten and the Great Mandala. The temple’s divine virtues include the immediate eradication of illness, protection from bad luck, safety in the home, and traffic safety.

During Hatsumode (New Year’s visit to the shrine), a four-way prayer service and prayer meeting are held. The temple is also crowded with many worshippers on the approach to the shrine, where the dango shop “Toraya,” which appears in Tora-san, is also open.

About 250,000 worshippers are said to visit the shrine.

From the nearest station, Shibamata Station on the Keisei Kanamachi Line is a 3-minute walk away. Or, from JR Koiwa, take the Keisei Bus bound for Kanamachi Station, and get off at Shibamata Teishakuten in about 20 minutes.

There are about 50 parking spaces available, but they are not available during the New Year’s holiday. Temporary parking lots and riverbed parking lots are available instead.
